Kyle Shanahan: ‘I don’t see any scenario’ where Jimmy Garoppolo returns to 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are heading into an offseason filled with questions concerning the future under center.

However, those scenarios will not include another year of Jimmy Garoppolo being among the possible starters moving forward.

“No, I don’t see any scenario of that,” Kyle Shanahan said regarding Garoppolo returning next season via ESPN.

Since the 49ers lost Super Bowl 54 against the Kansas City Chief, the writing has been on the wall that Garoppolo was on his final deal with the franchise. He managed to make it through his entire five-year contract and will head into free agency in the coming weeks.

Garoppolo experienced sustained success with the 49ers, but the franchise is looking to move forward with youth at the position with either Brock Purdy or Trey Lance. Purdy is expected to be sidelined for a year due to tearing the UCL in his right arm which will require Tommy John surgery.

Meanwhile, San Francisco appears ready to turn to Lance as the starter to at least begin the 2023 season. He underwent two surgeries to repair his right ankle and will be ready to go well ahead of training camp.

The 49ers also face questions elsewhere on the roster as star left tackle Trent Williams could head into retirement. San Francisco also may embark on extension talks with Pro Bowl defensive end Nick Bosa to keep him in the fold for the foreseeable future.

All that paints the picture of a busy offseason ahead for the 49ers to push them into the Super Bowl hunt.
