LA Rams claim veteran QB Baker Mayfield off waivers

It didn’t take Baker Mayfield long to find a new NFL home after mutually parting ways with the Carolina Panthers. The former first-overall pick was claimed off waivers by the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday. The Rams will pay the remaining $1.35 million of his contract for this season.

Mayfield holds an opportunity to play in Thursday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, as the Rams have sent him the playbook so that he could study the offense.

The 2022 season has been nothing but a disappointment for Mayfield, as he believed a change of scenery with the Panthers could lead him to rekindle his career. Instead, he struggled as the starter, losing the job to P.J. Walker, and became the third-string quarterback after Sam Darnold returned from injury.

It’s been a steady fall for Mayfield as he went from potentially being the Cleveland Browns’ franchise quarterback to now heading toward an uncertain future when he hits free agency next offseason.

Meanwhile, the Rams haven’t fared much better, sitting at a 3-9 record through the first 13 weeks. Injuries have plagued them throughout the season, including star quarterback Matthew Stafford being placed on the injured list due to a spinal cord contusion.

Stafford will likely sit out the rest of the year due to the Rams falling out of playoff contention. Mayfield will have the chance to compete for playing time against John Wolford and Bryce Perkins.

Wolford is dealing with a neck injury, while Perkins started Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
