Houston Texans could have quick turnaround with DeMeco Ryans

The Houston Texans have struggled for years, but with new head coach DeMeco Ryans and a bunch of draft picks, things could change quickly.

For years, the Houston Texans have been a joke. DeMeco Ryans is looking to make the laughing stop.

Ryans is back where he starred as a linebacker for six years as a two-time Pro Bowler, taking the head-coaching job this week. Ryans is the fourth head coach in as many years in Houston, as the franchise as tried and failed to find any stability.

Since 2020, the Houston Texans are 11-38-1. Yet suddenly, things don’t look as bleak.

Last year, Houston general manager Nick Caserio found corner Derek Stingley Jr. with the No. 3 overall pick, along with safety Jalen Pitre in the second round. With the secondary having some foundational pieces, the Texans can now focus on shoring up the offense.

Holding the No. 2 overall selection, the new braintrust of Ryans and Caserio are almost certainly going to land either Alabama’s Bryce Young or Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud as their new quarterback. Then, the Texans can take the best player available at 12th-overall, holding what was once the Cleveland Browns pick.

And this is where the ability to turn things around quickly comes to the fore. Houston has Cleveland’s first-round choices both this year and next after trading quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Browns last offseason. If Houston finds its signal-caller this year and then puts the extra choices to use, the Texans can become a force in the middling AFC South within a season or two.

This is something Ryans is well-aware of, and talked about at his introductory press conference this week, per ESPN:

“This is a young team; we were on the cusp. We got to add some pieces to what we’re doing here, but I’m so excited to get started and get to work with the young guys. And to build a winning program here with the Texans and I’m fired up. The excitement is real, and I can’t wait to get the work to get the coaching.”

The last three years have been brutal for the Texans and their fans. With Ryans and a bushel of picks coming to Houston, there’s newfound hope to build off in the coming months.
