NFL Head Coaching Watch: Browns Set to Interview Chip Kelly; Reid Interested in Cardinals
With NFL owners hoping to land the next best available coach, there seems to be a bit more clarity following Black Monday’s slew of head coaching cast offs.
The first of offseason rumblings comes from the Cleveland Browns’ front office, which intends on interviewing Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly. The news comes on the heels of the team firing head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert (via Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports).
The news comes as no surprise as Kelly is one of the most sought after college coaches this season. However, Kelly has made little indication on which team he will land with and would like to concentrate at the season at hand (readying for the Fiesta Bowl against the Kansas State Wildcats on Thursday), before making any sudden moves to the NFL.
As we’ve seen in the recent past, many college head coaches has faired well in the professional ranks. And the trend could be continuing with the likes of Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin, among others, who could very well make the leap to the NFL this offseason.
Kelly has been the mastermind behind Oregon’s dynamic and elusive offense, which continues to rank in the top-5 in total offense on a year-to-year basis. But many question whether his spread offense and affinity towards the option play will fair in the next level. In fact, it’s very well conceived that putting an elite quarterback at high risk outside the pocket could very well spell trouble for any lasting success in a franchise. But still, he’s managed the best out of a team that doesn’t send many players to the NFL Draft.
Meanwhile, Andy Reid’s unemployment might be more short-lived than anyone anticipated.
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the former Philadelphia Eagles head coach is set to interview with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.
The Chiefs have a lot to offer Reid in the way of a draft pick. Currently, the team owns the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft after finishing this season a measly 2-14.
The Arizona Cardinals have also shown interest in signing Reid. According to Jason La Confora of CBSSports.com, Reid is in line to interview with the team this week, which is said to be the frontrunner in landing Reid before the Chiefs made a go at him.
It will be interesting to see which team lands Reid this offseason. But the answer could come as soon as the end of the week.
