AFC West Week 17

The AFC West has been long decided, as the Broncos clinched the division weeks ago and now look towards a first round bye in the playoffs. Now, the other teams in the West are hoping to end the season on a high note, whereas the Chiefs probably wouldn’t mind securing the first overall pick in next year’s draft with another loss today. Here are the the breakdowns and the picks for the final two games in the West this season and the final games for three of the division’s teams this season.

Kansas City Chiefs 2-13 at Denver Broncos 12-3

The Broncos have an opportunity to not only end the season with 10 straight wins, but also to clinch a first round bye in the postseason, while the Chiefs almost have more of an incentive to lose for a shot at the first overall pick. Although, I generally don’t suggest taking favorites to cover large spreads, like the 17-point one in favor of Denver here, but everything points to a blowout with this game.

The Broncos are averaging nearly 30 points per game this season, while the Chiefs are averaging fewer than 14. This margin will likely becoming enlarged since the Broncos offense will go against the Chiefs defense and vice versa. Take the Broncos to cover -17 here today even if Kansas City doesn’t take a dive.

Oakland Raiders 4-11 at San Diego Chargers 6-9

A win for either team may not save coaching jobs, but it will make an ugly season look a little prettier and possibly build a little momentum for the offseason and for next year. These rivals would also love nothing more than to beat up on one another, as they both look to leave everything out on the field today.

The Chargers are playing better toward the end of the season, winning two of their last three and they’ll be up against a quarterback for Oakland who is getting his first career start. Terrelle Pryor will be under center as the starter for the first time in his career, so it would be hard to imagine him coming out and leading the struggling Raiders to a win on the road. Go with San Diego to cover -8 points today and end the season with a win.
