Arizona Wildcats Ranked No. 1 in AP Poll for First Time Since 2003

The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time since 2003 after a close 63-58 win over UNLV on Saturday. They began the season ranked sixth in the country, but have beaten several good teams, including a then-No. 6-ranked Duke Blue Devils on November 29.

“We’re an all-around team. Really you could see it in the box score. It was pretty even all the way around,” said Arizona’s Nick Johnson after his team’s victory over Duke, when all five starters had double-digit scoring nights. “We’re a good team and we can play with anybody.”

“I think it’s something we feel like we’ve earned,” Wildcats coach Sean Miller said. “We know that being ranked No. 1 doesn’t mean that we won the championship or the season’s now over, but I’m not going to play the negative card at all. … To be ranked No. 1 is maybe the greatest compliment you can have.”
