Broncos Coach Sean Payton Said Something Intriguing About Bo Nix’s Recovery

Over the last few weeks, the Denver Broncos’ focus has been on quarterback Bo Nix’s recovery from ankle surgery.

There remains much scrutiny of Nix, as he’s had a slow recovery, but head coach Sean Payton revealed on Saturday that his quarterback is on pace to participate on a limited basis in the Broncos’ minicamp next month and is expected to go full tilt once training camp starts over the summer.

“He’ll be well ahead of time for training camp,” Payton said via ESPN. “… We’re going to be the ones kind of holding him back if you will.”

The Broncos have continued to move cautiously with Nix as he’s had a difficult recovery path since fracturing his right ankle in the AFC Divisional Round win over the Buffalo Bills in January. He had undergone a second follow-up surgery on his ankle days prior to the draft in April.

That alone raised some outside concern, given it was a second operation in less than three months. However, the Broncos haven’t expressed any doubts about the situation, instead maintaining steady confidence that he will be ready to go well ahead of the 2026 season.

At the same time, Denver is moving cautiously to avoid setbacks.

“He’s going to want to push that earlier, but I’m probably, you know, we’ll be smart,” Payton said. “You’ll see him probably in [the mandatory] minicamp — probably. He’ll be full speed throwing, everything, in July before we get back here. He’s doing good.”

There remains plenty of time for Nix to get on track to be a full participant once training camp begins.
