Broncos hope Brock Osweiler beats Patriots

The Denver Broncos are playing for their season on Sunday night when they host the New England Patriots under the lights on Sunday night.

For that most-important affair, head coach Vance Joseph is rolling with Brock Osweiler at quarterback, despite Osweiler being at the helm on Sunday in a 51-23 blowout defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. Osweiler was mostly terrible in the game, throwing a pair of interceptions on 19-of-38 passing while seeing Denver blown out midway through the second quarter.

Still, Joseph sees Osweiler preferable to Trevor Siemian, who was benched after the first seven games of the year. Per ESPN:

“I thought Brock had an excellent week of preparation,” Joseph said Monday. “It felt good to our team, it was a confident week, the energy was there, it was detailed. … Brock’s experience Brock’s personality really helped our team bounce back and gave us confidence going into this week. I think Brock’s earned it from that standpoint.”

If the Broncos are going to pull off the upset at home over the defending champions, they will need osweiler to play one of the better games of his career. Luckily, there is some precedent for this. In 2015, Osweiler started on a Sunday night against the Patriots and threw for 270 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 30-24 overtime victory.

Osweiler, despite his uninspiring start against the Eagles, believes he can be the guy who helps Denver escape its problems, per ESPN:

“Absolutely, I think every player in the National Football League plays this game to be the starter, to contribute to his team, to help their football team win games,” Osweiler said. “So, I would love to be the starter of this football team. I can promise you that this game is not going to discourage me. I’m going to work harder than ever to clean up these problems and get us back in the win column.”

At 3-5, this is it for the Broncos. They remain 2.5 games behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West but could make a move on the wild card spots, sitting only two games behind both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills. A win over New England would be a huge step toward getting back into the race, while a loss would drop the Broncos to 3-6 and all but bury them before Thanksgiving.

All of that pressure is on the broad shoulders of Osweiler, who either plays well or likely sees his job lost to Paxton Lynch in the coming days. The time is now for Brock and the Broncos.
