Browns GM calls Baker Mayfield a ‘strong candidate’ for No. 1 pick
Baker Mayfield, who is set to play Saturday in the Senior Bowl, is also attracting the eye of new Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey, per Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
“A lot of what he is as a player fits with the mentality of [Cleveland Brown’s general manager] John Dorsey,†one source said. “Just his mental makeup as a player, John believes in building around those kinds of guys. … I think he’s a strong candidate [for the top pick] after this week.â€
Robinson noted a few key reasons why Dorsey would seriously consider Mayfield atop the draft.
Among them, he notes accuracy and nuance when it comes to ball placement. Mayfield is extremely accurate and savvy about putting the ball only where his receivers can catch them.
Robinson also notes that Mayfield is like Brett Favre in that he is not an angel off the field, and Dorsey knows all about that.
By all accounts, Mayfield had a very strong week of practice in Mobile, Ala. this week, even after showing up late due to a family health issue.
His accuracy has set him apart from the big-armed Josh Allen, who has been launching the ball all over the place the past few days.
Allen has previously been reported as a guy the Browns could take at No. 1, so this is something we’ll likely be talking about for quite some time leading up to the April draft.
