Calgary Flames Fire Coach Glen Gulutzan

After two seasons in charge, Calgary Flames coach Glen Gulutzan was fired by the GM on Tuesday, the team announced.

The 46 year old enjoyed a successful first season in 2016-2017, guiding the Calgary Flames to the playoffs. After being swept in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks, it was hoped that Glen Gulutzan would kick on.

However, the Flames failed to reach the playoffs this year, with their NHL campaign petering out towards the end. They finished the regular season with a record of 37-35-10.

Calgary didn’t have the players to compete this time around due to injuries and poor recruitment. Goalie Mike Smith, defenseman TJ Brodie and forwards Sean Monahan and Matthew Tkachuk had issues over the season. As well as that, free agency signing Jaromir Jagr only played 22 games before being put on waivers in January.

It all told towards the end of the season, as the Calgary Flames only won 17 of it’s last 24 games. The team was officially out of the playoffs following a 3 – 0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on March 26.

Calgary finished 20th overall, with the 28th worst home record in the NHL. At home, the Flames went 17-20-4.

General manager Brad Treliving also relieved assistant coaches Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard of their duties.

Treliving said that he felt the firing of Gulutzan was a necessary decision

“We underperformed. So when you go through the process of underperforming, you pull everything. It starts with myself and personnel decisions. You go through the players — who has played well and why? You are what your record says you are. But I felt in order to get our team to the level it needs to get to for each individual, we had to make this decision.”
