Chiefs sign Travis Kelce to extension after George Kittle’s deal with 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers made superstar tight end George Kittle a very rich man on Thursday making him the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL. That move immediately made the Kansas City Chiefs react by signing their superstar tight end, Travis Kelce, to a contract extension as well.

According to ESPN, the Chiefs have inked Kelce to a four-year deal.

The Kansas City Chiefs continued to spend to retain stars from their Super Bowl LIV championship team by agreeing to a four-year, $57.25 million contract extension with tight end Travis Kelce, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday.

Before signing Kelce to an extension, the Chiefs sent shockwaves throughout the NFL by signing Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes to a historic contract set to pay him more than half a billion dollars. Kansas City also signed Chris Jones to a new deal bolstering their defense for the long-term future.

As for Kelce’s deal, he’ll make a solid amount in guaranteed money even though he wasn’t able to match Kittle’s contract.

A source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that the deal includes just under $25 million in guarantees. The average annual value is slightly less than what San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle will receive after agreeing to a five-year, $75 million extension, sources confirmed to ESPN. Kelce and Kittle are widely considered the NFL’s top players at the position.

The real question now is which of these two teams can have the best long-term future with the stars they have locked up moving forward. The 49ers are arguably the better defensive team while the Chiefs have the edge offensively making for an intriguing dynamic in the years to come.
