Clippers reportedly poised to make play for Kawhi Leonard
There’s been speculation about a Kawhi Leonard trade this summer after his relationship with the San Antonio Spurs broke down. We’ve recently heard a report indicating multiple teams are interested in trading for Leonard. Now, one of those teams has been identified.
According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, the Los Angeles Clippers have already begun putting together a trade package for Leonard. Just in case.
Landing Leonard – who grew up outside of Los Angeles in Moreno Valley, hails from San Diego State and is known to be a favorite of Clippers consultant Jerry West – would be well worth the hefty price it would take to get him. Maybe the Clippers offer their two first-round picks in this June’s draft, and whatever combination of other talent the Spurs want in return. And suddenly, they’re back in Western Conference contention again.
Another team that has been suggested as a possible landing spot for Leonard is the Boston Celtics. However, Los Angeles would appear to be the more logical choice. The amount of money the team has already invested in top players will be a consideration for Boston.
It’s been a long, strange trip for Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs this season. He’s missed all but nine games dealing with an injury to his quad that has been a source of contention between himself and head coach Gregg Popovich.
Now it’s been reported he won’t be available at all during the playoffs, regardless of how deep San Antonio go.
