Colin Kaepernick – Not Even if You Were the Last QB on Earth?

The start of this NFL season has seen several quarterbacks fall to injury, to the potential benefit of Colin Kaepernick.

Colin Kaepernick has been without a team since the 2016 season when he instigated the ‘take a knee’ movement.

Since then, it’s been a long struggle for Colin Kaepernick. He won a grievance against the league in which he accused teams and owners of colluding against him.

In the offseason, Kaepernick heavily publicized that he was staying in shape and actively looking for an NFL team. The free agent quarterback’s agents have been working on getting him back on the field throughout this time.

However, the season kicked off and Kaepernick still could not find a team to take him. It looked as if something remarkable would need to happen for him to play NFL football again.

That something remarkable might be underway, as several teams find themselves in need of a quality quarterback.

New Orleans Saints signal-caller Drew Brees will be out for 6 weeks with a broken thumb. However, former first round pick Teddy Bridgewater will deputize for him.

Pittsburgh Steelers talisman Ben Roethlisberger is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Although, Pittsburgh moved quickly to sign former first-round pick Paxton Lynch as his replacement.

The New York Jets have lost both of their quarterbacks. Sam Darnold is battling with mono, and his backup Trevor Siemian is out for the season. Siemian broke his ankle against the Cleveland Browns on Monday.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is currently recovering from a foot injury. He is expected to recover, but the Panthers are the most likely destination for Kaepernick.

Over the summer, the Panthers were the team that were most heavily linked with him. This is in part due to his former teammate and friend, Eric Reid’s presence on the roster.

The Panthers will undoubtedly be one of the teams that Kaepernick’s agents have been contacting in the wake of the great quarterback culling of 2019. Despite the unlikelihood of him finding a team, he has remained in shape and hasn’t given up hope.

A source close to Kaepernick, 31, described the situation to SNY’s Chris Williamson:

“Colin is literally in the best shape of his life. He’s been working out 5 days a week at 5 am for 3 years. He wants to play and his agent has been contacting teams in need of a QB.”
