Conference USA Weekend In Review

Another week of college football passed on Saturday and there are a few surprises in the Conference USA.  Here is some of the notable things we saw during Conference USA football this week.

Marshall Could Be The True Favorites

Going into the season, the sportsbooks had Tulsa and East Carolina as the two teams most likely to win the division.  However, with Tulsa showing some weakness against Colorado State (more on that later)  it could be Marshall that is the other team behind East Carolina as the true favorites to win the division.

It was a combined effort from the Marshall offense and defense that would lead to a 55-0 win over Gardner-Webb.  It was the first time that these two teams have faced each other and Marshall shut out Gardner-Webb.  The Victory has put Marshall at 2-0.  This is the first time Marshall has started a season 2-0 since 1999 when they made a 13-0 run.

Does Tulsa’s Last Second Win Mean They are in Trouble?

A lot of overreacting happens in the early part of the season, but we have to ask questions when a team comes as close to losing as Tulsa did on Saturday.  It was a 34-yard field goal with no time on the clock that would save Tulsa, giving them a 30-27 victory.  Tulsa had to  come from behind to get the victory over Colorado State.

Tulsa is now 1-1.  They dropped there first game (a game that many called the most important of the season for Tulsa) and nearly dropped this game as well.  If Tulsa wants to remain on top of the Conference USA they will need to pull themselves together as teams like East Carolina and Marshall are already in the lead.
