Danny Farquhar Undergoes Surgery for Brain Swelling

On Sunday, doctors said that Chicago White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar remained in a stable but critical condition. The player underwent surgery to relieve brain swelling. He suffered a brain hemorrhage in the team’s dugout during Chicago’s game on Friday.

Chicago VP Ken Williams said that Danny Farquhar was in the neurosurgical ICU unit at  Rush University Medical Center. Adding that neurosurgeons there were closely monitoring him after he underwent a complicated procedure on Saturday night.

Williams said  Farquhar was a fighter and that he was going through the fight of his life at this time. Williams added that doctor’s had to perform another surgery which consisted of opening his skull and placing a clamp inside.

Williams said that Farquhar, who is 31, will remain at the hospital for a minimum of three weeks.

Farquhar was in the White Sox dugout Friday night during the sixth inning after appearing in the game and recording two outs versus the Houston Astros in the top half of the inning. He passed out and medical personnel from the team and EMTs that were on-site helped him. The pitcher regained consciousness prior to being rushed in an ambulance to the hospital.

The White Sox VP said that both Farquhar’s wife and mother attended the game on Friday and when they reached the team’s clubhouse, he was inside an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Sohail Shahpar the longtime agent of Farquhar told the media that the pitcher’s family was at his side on Sunday at the cardiac ICU unit of the hospital.

Shahpar said no one can imagine something like this happening, especially to a baseball player and during the middle of a game. The agent continued by saying as  a player you undergo Tommy John surgeries, or have problems with knees or shoulders or being hit by a line drive in the body but this is hard to imagine happening.
