David Montgomery: I’m Ready To Go Have Fun

Bears running back David Montgomery says he’s ready to have fun in the Chicago offense next season.

These quotes will come as a surprise to Bears fans, considering the team’s offense last year was anything but fun.

For Chicago, 2019 was a story of failing to live up to expectations. The Bears looked ready to push on when they won the NFC North title in 2018. That year, they ranked ninth overall for points scored in the NFL.

Last season, however, saw a sharp decline which saw them finish the season 29th overall in points.

In his rookie season, David Montgomery finished with 3.7 yards per attempt. That, and his 889 yards and 6 touchdowns were team highs – outlining the flatness of their offense.

New offensive coordinator Bill Lazor provides some hope, and David Montgomery has bought in.

“It’s going to be better this year,” Montgomery said.

“I’m going to be better this year for this team and this organization. I’m going to come as prepared as ever to lead that running back room the way I need to — and be who I need to be for this offense and this team.”

Still, coming off their worst offensive season since 2014, it will be tough for the Bears to get back to being one of the top offenses. Montgomery thinks the fact that he is more settled this year will help his play.

“Me not being solely a complete rookie and me going in with the unknown that, ‘I don’t know any of the offense,’ or me going in with the unknown that I don’t know if I’ll play or not. [Or] me going with the unknown of not knowing if I will get carries or not, or worrying about all the small stuff that doesn’t even matter anymore.

“No, I can really get to playing football now because I’m a year in and I’m a lot more confident. I’m ready to go have fun now.”
