DeMeco Ryans Unbothered By External Chatter

Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans says he isn’t concerned about WR Stefon Diggs dropping off late last season.

He also insists external expectations don’t influence the mindset of the coaching staff and players. In his first season, DeMeco Ryans coached the Texans to a surprise AFC South win.

The signing of Stefon Diggs from the Bills is one of a number of star recruits this offseason. The roster upgrades are intended to make them title contenders, and this is now expected of the team.

As well as Diggs, the Texans also recruited Danielle Hunter from the Minnesota Vikings and re-signed TE Dalton Schultz. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and running back Joe Mixon also join a formidable locker room.

Diggs may be a little past his prime. However, you only need to look at the existential questions surrounding his Buffalo exit to know how good he is. DeMeco Ryans thinks Diggs is more than capable of contributing in spite of not finishing last year well.

“We look at the guy’s entire career, what he’s done, how he’s been productive,” Ryans said.

“The guy has been an All-Pro player, he’s been a Pro Bowl player, over 1,000 yards for multiple seasons. So, we’re excited about adding Diggs to our team.

“The expectations on the outside don’t permeate inside our building,” he said.

“For us, when everyone is really striving and putting the work in to be better. And that’s what it’s all about. We don’t care about expectations. Talk doesn’t win games. We have to go out and play good football when that time comes.”

“We’re always hunting,” he said. “That doesn’t change for us. We’re always hunting. Expectations on the outside, whatever they may be, it really doesn’t change who we are.”
