Despite Retirement, Steve Spurrier’s Tongue Still Sharp as Ever

Steve Spurrier may have ran out on South Carolina, with the program left in shambles in the wake of hurricane HBC, but it doesn’t seem that retirement has dulled his infamously sharp tongue.

Over his decades long coaching career, Spurrier earned a reputation as someone who…didn’t do most of his talking on the football field. The Head Ball Coach has always had an odd habit—well, odd in this particular field—of actually answering questions honestly and bluntly.

In the past, some have said too bluntly. Those people were usually the worst though.

With a wry smile and a biting wit, over the years Spurrier’s favorite targets have included Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, Alabama coach Nick Saban, and everything Tennessee.

On Wednesday Ole Miss was on HBC’s tasting menu.

A noted golf-nut, Spurrier is Alabama this week for the Regions Tradition Pro-Am, where a reported asked him about the possibility of him becoming the College Football Commissioner. His response (via WIAT Birmingham’s Nic Gulas) was classic HBC—equal parts dismissive and mean!

“That sounds like a lot of work,” he said. “Traveling around the country trying to keep up with Ole Miss or whoever is under investigation right now…” Never mind that Baylor would keep him much busier moving forward.

Spurrier was referring to the 13 NCAA violations (nine under Hugh Freeze alone) levied against the Rebels’ program in February.
