Eric Bienemy Not Pitying Himself Over Head Coach Jobs

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy is, publicly at least, quite sanguine about not getting a head coaching job this year.

He reportedly interviewed for 6 positions this year and was unsuccessful. It’s the second straight year he’s tried and failed to secure a head coaching role.

Commentators will point towards a lack of diversity in NFL head coaches as a barrier for Eric Bienemy.

However, speaking ahead of Super Bowl LV, Eric Bienemy said he isn’t going to feel sorry for himself.

“It’s always about getting the right job,” he said.

“Sometimes the job and the person have to connect. There has to be a connection. The only thing I can do is be my most authentic self. That’s who I am. I can only be me. Some team has to want me. For some reason, that chemistry has not been a fit. There has not been that opportunity to connect, but that’s OK. At the end of the day, I have the opportunity to go out here and work with the Kansas City Chiefs, which is a great organization …”

It would be interesting to hear what Bienemy really thinks. One of the most highly rated coaches in the game, he ought to find opportunities easier to come by.

He can’t rock the boat, though. If he does he’ll be labelled as too controversial, and teams will be even less likely to take a shot on him.

As he points out, he’s not in the worst position in the world. The Chiefs will on Sunday compete for their second consecutive Super Bowl title. He’s an integral part of the beginnings of a potentially dynastic football team.

“We’ve had a great deal of success here that’s placed me in the situation where I’ve been recognized to interview for some jobs,” Bieniemy said. “Those interviews, for whatever reason, I have not been hired, which is OK because at the end of the day I still have an opportunity to go out there and help our team pursue and obtain our goal.”
