Jaguars not interested in Colin Kaepernick
The Jacksonville Jaguars have made it clear that they are not going to be in the market for Colin Kaepernick. After a brutal summer in which head coach Doug Marrone publicly waffled over which quarterback would be the starter, executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin hammered home the notion that Kaepernick won’t be involved in this discussion, at any point.
Coughlin, who along with Marrone and the rest of the coaching staff has watched Chad Henne and Blake Bortles stink up the joint something fierce, isn’t ready to give Kaepernick a chance in his building. This is what the two-time Super Bowl champion had to say about Jacksonville’s situation under center. Per ESPN:
“The entire scouting operation, the personnel department has been totally engaged in research and study of other teams and their rosters [and] who may well come available and areas particularly where we have concerns and needs,” Coughlin said. “So as you go through this whole process, it’s your entire personnel department, of course coach [Doug] Marrone, and the entire coaching staff, [GM] Dave Caldwell, myself, so there’s a lot of research and a lot of study that goes into this.
“You ask about quarterback, I mean, you’re looking always for any player that can help your team get better. So it doesn’t matter what position it is — we’ve done some homework in all areas.”
The Jaguars have one of the worst quarterback situations in football along with the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. Unless Bortles turns his production around and quickly, the Jaguars are going to be moving on from him after this season. The only other viable option would be to start Henne, something that isn’t about the future either. Henne, 32, has been a career backup for a good reason. He’s not very good.
For years, the Jaguars have been at the bottom of the standings. They have not reached the playoffs since the battery of David Garrard and Jack Del Rio got them to the Division round, where they were bounced by the then-undefeated New England Patriots. In the time since, the landscape in Duval County has been littered with horrid drafts, sagging attendance and a lack of any true star on the roster.
Coughlin certainly has his reasons for not signing Kaepernick, but he’d likely be an upgrade. Last year, Kaepernick played on a two-win San Francisco 49ers team and threw 16 touchdowns against four interceptions. At only 29 years old, there is still plenty of proverbial tread on the tires. If only somebody would give him the chance.
