Jameis Winston: Pick Me No. 1 Tampa Bay

Jameis Winston says the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should pick him as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. When asked why, he quickly replied, “Because I am the best player in the entire draft.”

This comment came following the pro day workout that Winston had in front of a big group of NFL scouts, general managers and coaches at the indoor practice facility of Florida State. Mike Tomlin the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Sean Payton the New Orleans head coach were among those in attendance.

However, Payton and Tomlin will likely not get the opportunity to select Winston. Tampa Bay was also well represented during the workout with Lovie Smith the head coach, Jason Licht the general manger, Dirk Koetter the offensive coordinator and Mike Bajakian the quarterbacks coach all in attendance.

They were able have a more extensive look at Winston than most pro days. The quarterback threw over 100 passes completing over 90 of them. At most pro days, a feature quarterback will only throw between 50 and 60 passes.

Winston was the only quarterback that was involved at this workout. He said he threw extra so his receivers could showcase their talents as well.

Winston played under center and in the shotgun, threw short, medium as well as long passes, all equally well. However, the most impressive and usual thing Winston did was prior to the workout. He gathered his receives in a group and introduced each one to the visiting scouts, coaches and GMs.

Speculation was Winston had gained weight, but he was weighed in at 231, which is the same weight that he carried during the scouting combine.

Even Licht liked what he saw. The Bucs have yet to firmly say Winston will be their choice. Tampa Bay is still going to hold private workouts with Marcus Mariota as well as Winston, said Licht.

Rumors have circulated that both Winston and Mariota will not attend the draft in Chicago on April 30. Winston has not made his final decision, but says his grandmother is ill and cannot travel and he wants to be around all the people that have been with him since day 1. Mariota says that he does not want to upset those at the draft, but he would prefer to be home in Hawaii with friends and family.

Many of the mock drafts have Winston going No. 1 in the draft, with Marcus Mariota the Heisman Trophy holder dropping all the way to No. 17 with the San Diego Chargers.
