Joe Montana is on the Blaine Gabbert Bandwagon
Since taking the reigns from Colin Kaepernick, who was put on season-ending injured reserve in late November, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert has only won one game, but he’s performed well enough in the last four starts that people are starting to take another look at the former first rounder.
Among those impressed by Gabbert’s play of late is legendary Niner Joe Montana. The Hall of Fame great had nothing but praise for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ castoff. Speaking to The Sporting News this week, Montana definitely distanced himself from ‘Team Kaepernick.’
“He has the athleticism to make defenses think about his running,†Montana said. “If things break down, he can still get out of trouble and make plays downfield, not only with his arm, but his legs, too.†[…]
“He’s definitely someone you need to keep around,†Montana said. “He’s proved he can not only play at the level to win games, but also in that offense. That’s key in proving his worth to the team. I don’t know what will happen with Colin or what their plans are with him, but at this point at time, I don’t think you let Blaine get away.â€
Montana is right about there only being enough room in San Francisco for one of these guys. That really shouldn’t be a problem though, as it’s difficult to envision a scenario in which Kaepernick returns next season.
