Kawhi Leonard Signs Four Year Extension With LA Clippers

Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers have agreed to a four-year, $176.3 million max contract, including a player option.

Previously, Kawhi Leonard declined his $36 million player option for the upcoming season to become a free agent.

He informed the Clippers he was returning to the team last Friday, after which a deal was finalized.

Kawhi Leonard (30), will miss time next season as he recovers from surgery. He went under the knife for a partially torn right ACL in July. The injury forced him out of the Clippers’ last eight playoff games.

“Kawhi is a transcendent player and a relentless worker who improves himself every day,” said Lawrence Frank, the team’s president of basketball operations.

“We share many of the same goals, which include a long-term relationship. This agreement marks another important moment for our franchise and our fans, as we strive to create a championship-caliber organization, where players find the success and fulfillment they seek. We’re eager to continue building with Kawhi.”

Before his injury, Leonard 24.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 52 regular-season games. He now enters his third year with the LA Clippers.

“For now, we will do whatever we can to support him in his recovery from injury,” Frank said in the statement. “We look forward to seeing him back where he wants to be, on the court with his teammates.”
