Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy, You Can Win With

Kyle Shanahan and the entire San Francisco 49ers organization are committed to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo despite his injury history.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been injured with a sprained ankle since Nov 1 and is unlikely to feature again this year.

Kyle Shanahan is going to have a salary cap headache this offseason. The 49ers will have around 40 players hitting free agency. As well as that, the salary cap is expected to drop.

As a result, Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury history is a concern.

His injury problems go back to his 2016 stint with the New England Patriots, when his shoulder injury caused him to miss a couple of starts. Garoppolo then sustained a torn ACL that kept him out for 13 games in 2018. With the 10 games he’s missed this year, he has been out for 23 regular season games overall in the last three years.

However, nobody can say that Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t a great quarterback, as Kyle Shanahan was at pains to point out.

In 30 regular season games as a starter, Garoppolo has led the 49ers to 22 wins. San Francisco is 7 – 26 in games he’s missed since 2017.

“Yes, I do believe Jimmy is going to be our quarterback next year,” Shanahan said.

“You look into every avenue and you see if there’s something out there that can get you a ton better,” Shanahan added.

“That’s the same answer for every position, but look at Jimmy, look what he’s done, look where he’s at financially. We better have a very good answer if you’re gonna find something better than that because Jimmy has shown in one year that he’s the guy who can take us to the Super Bowl, and I also think that Jimmy is going to get a lot better the more he plays.

“And, not to mention, look at Jimmy’s record when he’s been here. Jimmy, you can win with. He’s proven that. He’s proven he’s a starting quarterback in this league.”
