March Madness Futures: Duke Big Favorites

It seems like just yesterday that Villanova cut the nets, but we are just a few short months away from March Madness, with little time left to check in on the March Madness futures.

Duke opened as favorites this season for the third consecutive year. There odds have only gotten better since then, but it is worth noting that Duke has not cut the nets in any of the last three years they were pegged as favorites. In fact, an opening favorite has not won the championship since 2008. Duke has a big three that has kept them on top in Zion Williamson, RJ Barret and Cameron Reddish.

Meanwhile, the defending champs opened near the top of the odds, but have since plummeted to 25-1. It is not a death blow, as March Madness is designed to give even the biggest underdogs a chance. The Kentucky Wildcats won from a worse odds position than Villanova is currently in in 2016 and 2018.

Speaking of Kentucky, they opened with the second best odds to win it all this March. However, they now sit at 16-1. Last season, Kentucky struggled, winning just 26 games. However, the Wildcats trend toward bouncing back after rough seasons. For example, in 2015-16 they won 29 games. The next season appeared among the Elite 8.

North Carolina is begging to creep up the odds, thanks to a nice start to the season. They most recently took out the team with the third best odds in 10-1 Gonzaga. There is now three teams with 12/1 odds and the Tar Heels are among them.
