NBA Rumors: Celtics Real Threat To Clippers’ Attempt To Re-Sign Blake Griffin
The Los Angeles Clippers are potentially on the verge of losing their two biggest stars. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are set to hit the free agent market this summer with both players possibly considering signing elsewhere.
Although the Clippers are still the favorites to sign Griffin and Paul, there are a few teams out there making Doc Rivers and company nervous with free agency approaching. One of those teams is the Boston Celtics.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, Boston is a legitimate threat to sign Griffin this summer, transcription via Dan Feldman of Pro Basketball Talk:
I think the Clippers may think this too, and certainly some other teams. Boston is really the danger for Blake Griffin.
I think Boston’s two primary free-agent targets right now are Gordon Hayward and Blake Griffin. Now they’re not going to get both of them, but they’re both players who would potentially have interest there and who Boston I think looks at in different ways with their future.
Griffin, who has battled many different injuries over the last few years, may be seeing his window of opportunity closing in terms of competing for a title. The Clippers don’t seem to be anywhere near the title chase right now nor will that improve next season without substantial changes.
The high-flying forward joining Isaiah Thomas, Al Horford, and Brad Stevens may be a step in the right direction for Boston. The Cleveland Cavaliers are the team to beat in the Eastern Conference and adding Griffin may help them take down LeBron James and company.
Another option for Boston, and perhaps their top priority this summer, is going after Gordon Hayward. The Utah Jazz star will become a free agent with Griffin next month and may look to rejoin his former college coach in Boston.
