Carmelo Anthony is open to coming off the bench for Rockets

Former All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony is set to begin another chapter of his career with the Houston Rockets. It hasn’t taken long for questions about possible coming off the bench to arise once again.

However, this time around Anthony has a different response as he appears to be open to possibly making that switch if it’s best for the team, according to Tim McMahon of ESPN.

“At the end of the day, we’re all going to camp to figure out what works in order for this team to try to win a championship,” Anthony said at media day Monday, a day before the Rockets open training camp in Lake Charles, Louisiana. “If that time comes, we’ll have that conversation. My goal is to go into training camp, be the best player I can be, be in the best shape I can be and do what I have to do to help this team get over the hump and win a championship. That’s all it is.

“All the questions of coming off the bench, I don’t want to answer those questions at the end of the day. Whatever I have to do to help this team win a championship, that’s what’s going to be done.”

This is an entirely different situation that Anthony is entering that has appeared to have given him a new perspective. This likely came due to the struggles he had at times in his lone campaign with the Oklahoma City Thunder. This likely gave him more clarity as to what he has to offer at this point in his career. Prior to the start of last season, he had laughed off questions about coming off the bench.

There are now more questions about his ability to be an effective scorer at this point in his career. He has made a living from producing offensively in isolation situations. This alone may make it more appealing to come off the bench where he can maximize his scoring ability and take the pressure off of him as an individual defender.

Nonetheless, it appears that Anthony has changed his point of view where he realizes this could be one of his final opportunities to truly compete for an NBA title.
