Clippers’ Paul George admits Kawhi Leonard is No. 1 option

After experiencing an injury-plagued 2021-22 campaign, the LA Clippers are hoping to get back toward NBA title contention.

The Clippers’ push to those lofty expectations starts with their star power in Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The latter has made it quite clear that he’s more than comfortable being the second fiddle to Leonard.

“Yeah, look at the [Miami Heat] wing-wing DWade [Dwyane Wade] and LeBron [James],” George said Sunday following the Clippers’ 119-117 preseason loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena via ESPN. “I think it just comes down to — listen, Kawhi is the No. 1. And I am totally fine with that. I think I try to complement him with being able to take the load off of him.

“Everybody says, ‘Kawhi [and] you are 1 and 1, [or] 1A, 1B.’ I’ll publicly say, I’m the 2. Kawhi’s the 1, I’m the 2. So that part we nipped in the bud. Like there’s no ego when it comes to that.”

Although George is more than comfortable taking the backseat to Leonard as the leading factor, he’s well aware of his skill and ability. He has proven he can heavily impact the game on both ends of the floor.

George has firmly established himself as one of the game’s top players when healthy. If the Clippers hope to contend for an NBA title they will need their dynamic duo to stay healthy.

The front office has constructed one of the league’s deepest rosters that could see a special season ahead.
