Former Cavs GM David Griffin talks about how the Kyrie Irving trade will be viewed in the future

After losing to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals last season, the last thing anyone anticipated was Kyrie Irving asking the Cleveland Cavaliers to be traded. Not only Irving being traded by the Cavs but to the Boston Celtics of all teams.

David Griffin, the former general manager of the Cavs, recently gave his opinion on the Irving trade. Griffin said the following about the blockbuster deal, via SiriusXM NBA Radio.

“Will it be judged historically as a good trade? No. I mean, it won’t be, because Kyrie’s going to be a special individual player. And the way this works from a social-media standpoint and a media-coverage standpoint, all they’re going to talk about is how good he is.”

Narrative

So far, the Celtics clearly got the better end of the blockbuster trade. Irving looks like an NBA MVP candidate in Boston. He has quickly led them to the top spot in the Eastern Conference with an 18-3 record.

The Cavs, however, have struggled from the word go this season. They have only just started to get back on track with seven straight wins. Cleveland has found it difficult to reclaim their championship-caliber form while the Celtics haven’t missed a beat even after losing Gordon Hayward for the season in the first game of the season which came against the Cavs.

It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out but Griffin seems to be on point with his comments as social media helps control the narrative these days.
