Fred VanVleet to re-sign with Rockets

The Houston Rockets are building something special in the Ime Udoka era, with the team recently trading for superstar Kevin Durant, re-signing Steven Adams and now bringing back Fred VanVleet.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Rockets will decline their team option with VanVleet for next season and then sign him to a two-year deal worth $50 million.

Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet intends to sign a two-year, $50 million contract to stay with the franchise, with a player option in 2026-27, sources told ESPN.

The Rockets are declining VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option for next season, the sources said, and now secure a new deal with VanVleet’s representative, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.

Houston knows it’s in a championship window with potentially only the reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder sitting ahead of them in the Western Conference.

The team is comprised of savvy veterans and talented young players, while being led by a passionate and fiery head coach in Udoka. The biggest issue for the Rockets heading into the NBA offseason was the lack of a dependable offensive threat late in games, but they addressed that with the addition of Durant, setting them up for a big season during the 2025-26 campaign.

Although the Rockets have addressed their issues already this summer, especially with the Durant move, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that they might do more to get closer to the Thunder with more trades potentially on the horizon moving forward.
