Isaiah Thomas Nearing Return
According to reports, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Isaiah Thomas is on the way to his NBA comeback. The former Boston Celtics player will take part in 5-on-5 practices with a possible sting in the G league.
Via ESPN, Cleveland is trying to find a way to have Thomas play with their G league partner, the Canton Charge. The five-on-five practise sessions are scheduled before the game against the Golden State Warriors.
Thomas was injured while playing for the Celtics in last years’ playoffs, before being traded to the Cavs in August. This was the trade that saw Kyrie Irving go to Boston.
Yahoo sports reported that the first week of January was the target for Isaiah Thomas’ return. Coach Tyronn Lue didn’t provide any clarification on the matter.
“I don’t know where that came from, but I hope so. I hope it’s accurate,†he said.
“That’s not my job. When he’s ready to play, I’m ready.”
The Cavs play against the Portland Trail Blazers on the second of January. On the third, they go away to the Boston Celtics.
Thomas has in the past referenced his desire to get revenge on the Celtics. If he is fit to play, it would be another narrative in a game that will also see Kyrie Irving face his former team.
LeBron
The Cavaliers have won 18 of their last 20 games in his absence.
Isaiah Thomas, a two time All-Star was also a member of the All-NBA Second Team in 2016-17. Last season he achieved a career-best 28.9 points per game.
Having him available again would lighten the load somewhat on LeBron James to be a play maker. LeBron has been heavily rumored to be on his way out of Cleveland. It also could prove to be useful future proofing to get Thomas firing ahead of next season.
