Jalen Duren Sends Clear Message About Pistons Future
Following months of uncertainty in contract negotiations, star big man Jalen Duren formally accepted the five-year, $200 million deal from the Detroit Pistons.
The two sides remained at a contract impasse for around four months, which bled into the start of training camp earlier this week.
Duren chose to remain unsigned, despite contract offers from the Pistons ranging from $170 million to $190 million throughout the summer. It reached an apparent tipping point, leading Detroit to give him a lucrative deal that will keep him in tow for the long haul.
“The clearest message I can convey is that I am a Detroit Piston,” Duren said via The Detroit Free Press. “I want to be a Detroit Piston for life. I want to give everything I’ve got for this city and the fans. From me to y’all, y’all will have everything I have. Y’all will get everything I can give.”
The 22-year-old reportedly felt the contract talks were handled poorly by the Pistons, as the team had quickly moved to offer Ausar Thompson a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale deal earlier in the month.

There were also some weight clauses in some of the team’s previous contract offers to him that didn’t sit well with him. It was a long, drawn-out process that created uncertainty about Duren’s long-term future in Detroit.
However, he has inked the lucrative contract that will keep him as a key piece alongside Thompson and Cade Cunningham. The Pistons are building around the young core group that guided them to the best record in the Eastern Conference last season.
