Kings officially commit to head coach Luke Walton for next season

The Sacramento Kings are going through some changes in the wake of Vlade Divac’s departure. The team has a new general manager in Monte McNair and it has been uncertain what his plans may be for the immediate future in terms of the head coaching position.

Fortunately for Walton, McNair has him in his future plans. McNair recently commented on Walton’s status with the team and the fact he’ll be back for the 2020-21 NBA season, via ESPN.

“I’ve got to know him the last few days; we’ve had some good conversations,” McNair said. “I’ve heard great things. So far I think we’ve had a great rapport. Luke’s going to be our coach next year. I’m really excited to work with him. I think we’re aligned with our vision and we’re gonna start implementing it.”

It has been a rough road for Walton during his first few years as a head coach in the NBA. He tried to make a name for himself with the team that he won two titles as a player in the Los Angeles Lakers, but one LeBron James groin injury essentially ended his time with the team as a coach.

This season wasn’t a total failure for Walton with the Kings in playoff contention throughout the season. However, the team did finish their shortened season 10 games under .500 at 31-41.

It remains to be seen whether he’ll be given the chance to turn the Kings into a winner as he may have one more season to prove his worth.
