Knicks sign head coach Tom Thibodeau to long-term deal

The New York Knicks continued their busy offseason by agreeing to a three-year extension with head coach Tom Thibodeau that runs through the 2027-28 season.

Under Thibodeau, the Knicks have finally found stability and have become a playoff constant. New York is coming off earning the No. 2 seed behind a 50-32 record while reaching the second round of the playoffs.

The Knicks have moved past the first round in the last two campaigns after winning only one playoff series between 2001 and 2022.

New York has the opportunity to take the next step toward being a legitimate NBA title contender, and the organization’s long-term commitment to him demonstrates that the team believes he can be the coach who guides them down that path.

The Knicks have stiff competition with the defending champion Boston Celtics, revamped Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Cleveland Cavaliers.

New York has spent much of the offseason further stabilizing their roster for next season and well beyond that.

The front office made the blockbuster move to acquire Mikal Bridges to add to their core group of young blossoming talent. The Knicks also signed OG Anunoby to a five-year, $212.5 million deal while securing star point guard Jalen Brunson to a four-year, $156 million extension.

New York did lose Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but it could open the door to Mitchell Robinson playing a more significant role next season.

The busy offseason indicates that the Knicks are fully committed to building a championship contender.
