LeBron James Reveals What Really Separated Lakers From Thunder

In the time since the Los Angeles Lakers bowed out of the second round of the playoffs after being swept by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, star forward LeBron James has had enough time to digest the shortcomings.

In his first public remarks following the loss, James, during the latest episode of his podcast “Mind the Game,” said it simply came down to the Thunder having more roster talent.

“I have the passion and the admiration to hoist a Larry O’Brien Trophy up every single year, but I also have a realization of what particular team I have been a part of in that particular year,” James said via ESPN. “And understanding this year, we fought, and we played to the maximum ability of our team. But ultimately, if we’re being completely honest, we were out-talented.”

The Thunder hold arguably the league’s deepest roster, filled with young and proven talent around their star core group of reigning back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. Despite Williams being sidelined with a hamstring injury, Oklahoma City had more than enough production to push past the Lakers in four games.

Meanwhile, entering the series, it was an uphill battle for the Lakers as star guard Luka Doncic was sidelined with a hamstring injury that kept him off the floor for the entire matchup, even if it had gone the full seven games.

On top of that, Austin Reaves was still working his way back into form from his oblique injury that he had returned from a few games before the second round series. The Lakers also didn’t have a deep and dependable roster that could keep pace with the Thunder.

James’ assessment holds up, placing greater value on the front office piecing together a stronger roster this upcoming summer if the Lakers hope to contend for an NBA title next season.

Now, whether James will be a part of those plans is something that everyone must wait and see.
