Mavs superstar Anthony Davis expected to miss time

The Dallas Mavericks will be without star big man Anthony Davis for the next few games due to a groin injury.

Davis suffered the injury midway through the second quarter of the 126-116 Christmas Day loss to the Golden State Warriors. He tried to sprint down the court to catch a go-ahead pass in transition, then immediately began to limp toward the bench.

The 32-year-old has a long history of dealing with nagging injuries that have largely kept him off the court over the last couple of seasons, especially since arriving to the Mavericks via the Luka Doncic trade before last February’s trade deadline.

Davis suffered an adductor strain in his debut with Dallas that forced him to sit out 18 games. He missed 14 games this season due to a left calf strain. In 16 games played this year, he’s averaging a double-double with 20.5 points and 10.9 rebounds while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor and 32.3 percent from beyond the arc.

This features posting 10 double-doubles with 11 20-point outings, including three 30-point performances. Dallas holds an 8-8 record with Davis on the floor this season and a 4-12 record without him.

His absence places a greater offensive responsibility on rising rookie Cooper Flagg, who has progressively shown more promise in his first NBA season. The 19-year-old experienced a notable uptick in production in December, averaging 24.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists while shooting 53.7 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.
