NBA Rumors: Boston Celtics To Pursue Kevin Durant In NBA Free Agency
The most sought-after player on the NBA free-agent market this summer will be none other than superstar Kevin Durant. Although the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors could end up in a tug-of-war for his services come July, there’s plenty of other options on the open market that Durant could explore once he’s officially an unrestricted free agent.
One of those options will be the Boston Celtics. The once-dominant NBA franchise is attempting to build the team back into a legitimate title contender and has done better than expected up to this point.
Apparently, the Celtics brass may have their sights set on making a run at Durant with the perennial All-Star already saying good things about the city of Boston via Chris Forsberg of ESPN:
With Boston positioned to fish again this summer for that elusive big catch that could propel the team forward, the Celtics would covet the chance to pitch Boston as a possible destination when Durant reaches unrestricted free agency.
Over the past month or so, the Warriors have emerged as the potential favorite to sign Durant in free agency. Golden State will have to tweak the roster slightly, but will have the room for Durant while keeping Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry in the fold.
At this point, the Warriors are also favored to win it all once again this season with 5/7 odds via Sportsbook.ag. Oklahoma City comes with the fourth best odds at 20/1 with the Cleveland Cavaliers (7/2) and San Antonio Spurs (3/1) ahead of the Thunder.
Although the Thunder will still be a significant threat to retain Durant, the Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards are also among the teams expected to invite the one-time NBA MVP for a visit this summer. Much like the way LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony held other free agents captive a few years back, teams and players likely won’t commit to new deals until Durant is officially off the market.
