NBA Rumors: San Antonio Spurs To Join Kevin Durant Sweepstakes
Last year, the San Antonio Spurs surprised everyone by actually improving their already championship-caliber team by adding veteran forward LaMarcus Aldridge in NBA free agency. This summer, the Spurs will try to make an even bigger splash once free agency gets underway in July.
According to Chris Mannix of The Vertical, San Antonio will attempt to sign superstar Kevin Durant once he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1:
Still, so much remains unknown. The lure of playing with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson has to be appealing, but would Durant really jump to a possible two-time champion, to a team that will never be his? San Antonio has rebuilt its dynasty, but rival executives believe the Spurs will explore ways of adding Durant to the mix, and the franchise’s culture makes it intriguing.
With Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili nearing the end of their respective careers in the NBA, the Spurs have already done a great job of rebuilding. Tony Parker, Aldridge, and Kawhi Leonard will help pave the way for the future and could instantly be title contenders for many more years with the addition of Durant.
Although San Antonio could be an intriguing option for Durant this summer, the veteran forward will have plenty of options once he officially hits the free-agent market in July. The defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors are expected to be the favorites followed by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, and Los Angeles Lakers.
As many big-name free agents have done in the last few years, Durant will likely take his time to make his decision this summer. The one-time NBA MVP will probably going through the motions with team visits and narrows his search to a few teams before eventually signing on the dotted line at some point during the NBA offseason.
