Packers hire Matt LaFleur as Mike McCarthy’s successor at head coach

Since the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy the Green Bay Packers have been moving toward finding their next head coach.

It hasn’t taken long for the Packers to put their next head coach in place with the expected hiring of former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Although the Titans had notable struggles offensively this past season with quarterback Marcus Mariota struggling to bounce, LaFleur had plenty of success with his previous two stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons.

He had a part in helping both Matt Ryan and Jared Goff put together their best seasons of his career during his stay with both franchises. Meanwhile, the Packers are coming off a disappointing 2018 campaign, having missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2006 season.

Green Bay is hoping the hiring of LaFleur can help bring creativity back to the offense that had created conflict between McCarty and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This is also a hiring that signals that the franchise is fully all in on the former two-time NFL MVP.

This will mark LaFleur’s first time being a head coach in the NFL. The decision to make a hiring at this point gives him a chance to go through the entire offseason process in shaping the team through free agency and the 2019 NFLDraft.
