Rockets trade Cam Whitmore to Wizards

One of the most active teams during this NBA offseason has been the Houston Rockets, a team that believes it is in a championship window after taking a giant leap during the 2024-25 campaign.

On Saturday, the Rockets made another move, which was somewhat predictable after they acquired Kevin Durant and Dorian Finney-Smith. The team has traded Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

The Houston Rockets are trading Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards for two second-round picks, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

Whitmore was one of the most promising young players on the Rockets’ roster, as he has the potential to be a star in the NBA if given ample time on the basketball floor.

Unfortunately, with Durant and Finney-Smith now in the fold, Whitmore became expendable and a player that would be better suited playing elsewhere in order to get the desired time on the floor.

The Rockets selected Whitmore with the No. 20 pick in the 2023 NBA draft but had trouble giving the talented prospect significant playing time. The deal gives Whitmore, who turns 21 this week, the opportunity for an increased role for a rebuilding Wizards team. Whitmore is a Maryland native, so the trade also sends him back closer to home.

Whitmore being added to the Wizards’ roster is a step in the right direction for the former first-round draft pick, as he’ll have opportunities to reach his true potential. It also gives the Wizards another talented young player with a significant upside.
