Russell Westbrook’s Retirement Announcement Features Unforgettable Quote

After 18 NBA seasons, point guard Russell Westbrook announced his decision to retire.

Westbrook took to social media with a video to share that he is ending his illustrious NBA career, which spanned nearly two decades.

“Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end,” the 37-year-old Westbrook wrote on his post, which contained a video of his career narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan. “You had to be there. And now it’s over.”

Westbrook put forth a Hall of Fame-worthy career that saw him earn numerous accolades, including an MVP award, nine All-Star Game selections, two All-Star Game MVPs, nine All-NBA Team selections, two scoring titles, leading the NBA in assists three times, and being selected for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Westbrook played for seven different teams, including spending his first 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He also played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings.

He is one of three players in league history to average a triple-double for a season, which he accomplished that feat four times, and is the all-time leader in career triple-doubles (209). He also has the most career rebounds by a guard.

The 37-year-old could have continued his NBA career, as he had contract offers from the Kings and Wizards, but chose to retire.

At his peak, Westbrook was one of the league’s best players behind his explosive playmaking with his scoring and passing. The tenacity with which he played was admired by his peers and highly respected around the league.
