Terry Rozier’s Miami Heat Exit Comes With a Twist No One Expected

The Miami Heat have waived veteran guard Terry Rozier, securing a roster spot ahead of the playoffs.

Rozier was in the final year of his four-year, $97 million contract that he had signed with the Charlotte Hornets. He was making $26.6 million this season with the Heat.

Rozier has been away from the Heat since he was arrested on Oct. 23 in connection with a wide-ranging investigation regarding illegal sports betting. Shortly after that, he was placed on leave by the NBA due to his alleged involvement in the matter linked back to his tenure with the Charlotte Hornets.

He was acquired by the Heat in January 2024, and there remains uncertainty about whether the organization should have been made aware of the investigation into Rozier.

The Heat had until 5 p.m Friday to waive a player who has either an expiring contract or one that holds a team option for next season.

It is likely that no other team will sign him to a contract until his legal matters are resolved. In 11 seasons, he holds career averages of 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 41.8 percent from the floor and 36.1 percent from beyond the arc in 665 career games with the Boston Celtics, Hornets, and Heat.

Miami is using the open spot to ink guard two-way guard Jahmir Young to a two-year contract. He previously signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Heat last August and later saw his deal converted to a two-year deal in October.
