Thunder sign Chet Holmgren to rookie max extension
After winning the franchise’s first NBA title, excluding the Seattle Supersonics’ accomplishments, the Oklahoma City Thunder are starting to secure the future of their top players.
Not long after securing reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s future in Oklahoma City, the Thunder have now taken care of rising star Chet Holmgren.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Oklahoma City and Holmgren have agreed to a rookie contract extension.
Oklahoma City Thunder star and 2025 NBA champion Chet Holmgren has agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach $250 million, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN on Wednesday morning.
Although Holmgren had his fair share of struggles during the NBA playoffs, which bled over into the NBA Finals, the former first-round draft pick has proven his worth to the team. The two sides agreeing to a new deal was a formality and a smart move, following their championship win, in an effort to keep the team’s core intact for the foreseeable future.
The next order of business for the Thunder will be making the same kind of deal with up-and-comer Jalen Williams, who has also proven his worth while playing alongside Gilgeous-Alexander and Holmgren, via ESPN.
Oklahoma City officials will move toward locking in All-NBA superstar Jalen Williams, who has momentum in his rookie extension talks.
If the Thunder can keep this core intact for the foreseeable future, and all indications suggest that this will be the case, Oklahoma City will likely remain a perennial title contender. This also bodes well for the team adding pieces around these three players, as they’ll have a great chance of being a dynasty.
