Victor Wembanyama headlines NBA All-Rookie First Team

San Antonio Spurs rising star big man Victor Wembanyama added another impressive accolade to his resume with an All-Rookie First-Team selection.

Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren joined with maxed-out votes. The two were joined by Charlotte Hornets’ Brandon Miller, Miami Heat’s Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Golden State Warriors’ Brandin Podziemski to round out the First Team.

The Second-Team nominations were for Dallas Mavericks’ Dereck Lively II, Houston Rockets’ Amen Thompson, Utah Jaz’s Keyonte George, Thunder’s Cason Wallace, and Memphis Grizzlies’ GG Jackson.

Wembanyama’s historic rookie campaign has him on the brink of becoming only the sixth rookie to an All-Defense or All-NBA Team nod. He would become the 22nd rookie to notch an All-NBA team in league history.

The 20-year-old is coming off averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and an NBA-best 3.6 blocks per game. That helped him become the sixth unanimous winner of the Rookie of the Year award while he finished second behind Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Although Holmgren fell just behind Wembanyama in the Rookie of the Year voting, it shouldn’t overshadow the impressive first full season for the promising big man. He averaged 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 37 percent from beyond the arc while playing in all 82 regular season games.

The 22-year-old has cemented himself as a key member of the Thunder’s stellar young core, which led them to the top overall seed in the Western Conference playoff picture.
