NBA Rumors: Celtics Expected To Make ‘Strong Run’ At Anthony Davis
The Boston Celtics were able to upgrade their roster this summer with the addition of forward Gordon Hayward. The team was able to bring in another star player to play alongside All-Stars Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford to compete with LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers.
Although the Celtics have improved to an extent, Boston is still considered to be a step behind the Cavs. That being said, Danny Ainge and company are still looking for ways to upgrade the roster, and it appears they’ll be keeping a close eye on superstar Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans, according to Chris Mannix of The Vertical:
In addition, rival executives expect Boston to be keeping close tabs on New Orleans, which is entering a critical season. The Pelicans are committed to seeing if an Anthony Davis-DeMarcus Cousins frontcourt can work, but if the season goes awry, it’s widely believed the Celtics will make a strong run at Davis, who is under contract through 2020.
The Pelicans made a major move after the NBA All-Star Game earlier this year by surprisingly being able to land DeMarcus Cousins in a blockbuster trade. New Orleans put together arguably the most talented pairing of big man the league has seen in a long time if not ever.
Unfortunately, the duo of Davis and Cousins didn’t prove to be an instant success. The Kentucky products had their moments but were by no means combined to be a playoff contender in the Western Conference.
Next season will be the true test for the Pelicans as they’ll have one year to convince Cousins to stay with the team long-term. If it doesn’t work out in New Orleans, the team could be in danger of losing both Cousins and Davis as trade talks with teams like the Celtics may transpire with a full rebuild on the horizon.
