NFL Sources: Colts Planning to Hire Josh McDaniels as New Head Coach
League sources in the NFL have said that the Indianapolis Colts will hire New offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels of the New England Patriots as head coach following the February 4 playing of Super Bowl LII.
The Colts made the decision to offer McDaniels the job after meeting with him last Friday to discuss long-term visions of the team’s and McDaniels, said league sources.
With more than sufficient resources to bring in additional talent on the roster and one of the league’s most talented quarterbacks on the roster, there will not be any excuses the organization will have if the Colts do not rise under the tutelage of McDaniels.
During the first meeting the Colts had with McDaniels, team owner Jim Irsay was not present. Sources said that Irsay did accompany general manager Chris Ballard to New England for the second meeting with McDaniels.
Earlier in January it was reported by the NFL Network that McDaniels would accept the offer by the Colts.
The Patriots OC would inherit a team that last season was 4-12 under Chuck Pagano finishing in the AFC South cellar. The Colts will pick No. 3 overall in the NFL draft and are expecting to have Andrew Luck, their franchise quarterback, ready to play in the opening game of the 2018 Â regular season after missing all of the 2017 season due to a shoulder injury.
If McDaniels takes the reins of the Colts it will be his second stint head coaching. For the 2009 and part of the 2010 season, McDaniels coached the Denver Broncos before he was fired, finishing his tenure with the Broncos at 11-17.
NFL Offer
Since 2012, when McDaniels returned to New England as the offensive coordinator he has been coveted by many teams. New England has played in six straight AFC championship game and won the Super Bowl twice during that period.
With McDaniels almost certain to be leaving the Patriots following the Super Bowl, New England is expected to lose its two coordinators to NFL head-coaching positions, as Matt Patricia the current defensive coordinator is expected to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions said NFL sources last week.
The Patriots may have to go hunting for several new coaches as the contract for Joe Judge the team’s special-teams coach expires following the Super Bowl.
