49ers’ Fred Warner Sounds Off on Dre Greenlaw Incident That Led to Suspension

The NFL has levied a one-game suspension without pay on San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for unsportsmanlike conduct during Sunday’s win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The incident occurred with 6:30 left in the second quarter after Greenlaw hit Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold late and out of bounds. He was then involved in a heated exchange with Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, where he head-butted Jones, who was not wearing a helmet.

If Greenlaw’s appeal isn’t successful, he will miss the Week 6 game on Oct. 19 against the Washington Commanders.

49ers linebacker Fred Warner said he saw the incident unfolding across the field and attempted to intervene, but was too late.

“I tried to get there as fast as I could,” Warner said via ESPN. “I was too far away. He’s helpless in that situation. He’s all by himself on their sideline. Of course, they’re trying to gang up on him and good on them for baiting him into doing something. But we know we got to be smart in all those situations … It’s just an unfortunate situation.”

Over the years, Greenlaw has earned a reputation for sometimes unnecessary actions that have drawn unwanted attention. This incident puts his team in a tough spot without him and could negatively impact the 49ers’ defense against the Commanders.

Through the first five games, Greenlaw has 37 total tackles and one forced fumble. He ranks second on the team in tackles.

If he misses action, rookie Jaden Dugger will fill in his spot against Washington. Dugger is coming off posting nine tackles and a sack against the Seahawks.
