49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has ‘pretty good idea’ who he’ll start at QB

Since the San Francisco 49ers moved up in this year’s draft to take Trey Lance at the third overall pick, it put a ticking clock on Jimmy Garoppolo’s time.

It’s something that all parties have acknowledged to varying degrees throughout the last few months. As the 2021 season inches closers, it pushes the 49ers toward deciding who is the starting quarterback.

San Francisco has yet to name the starter, but head coach Kyle Shanahan recently voiced that he has an idea what direction the team will head. (H/T NBC Sports)

“I got a pretty good idea,” Shanahan said Wednesday to reporters regarding who will start for the 49ers.

His comments come a few days after Shanahan refused to name a starter between Garoppolo and Lance after the preseason victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

It’s become abundantly clear the 49ers are playing the situation close the vest. The team already knows what it plans to do as even Garoppolo aired that sentiment.

“Yeah, I have a pretty good idea,” Garoppolo said. “It’s whatever he decides, yeah. I have a pretty good idea, I’m pretty happy with where I’m at right now and everything, and just the offense as a whole.

“But yeah, Kyle’s the head man. He’ll make the call.”

If Garoppolo gets the call, he’s well aware that the pressure is on him to perform at a high level. His job isn’t on the line on a week-by-week basis, but he could have a much shorter leash than he may think.

It will be on him to make the most out of the opportunity in what may be his last go-around with the 49ers.
