49ers Host Giants on Monday Night Football

Week 10 of the NFL regular season comes to a close when the New York Giants visit the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Both the Giants and 49ers have “situations” at quarterback this season, as some Giants fans are calling for coaches to pull Eli Manning. Meanwhile, Nick Mullens is preparing to make just his second NFL start for the 49ers.

The Giants have lost five straight and entering this week were tied for the worst record in the NFL, but head coach Pat Shurmur is staying with Manning, a winner of two Super Bowls.

Mullens is starting due to injuries, but in his debut in the NFL last week helped the 49ers end a losing streak of six straight in a 34-3 win over Oakland on November 1. Coach Kyle Shanahan said that after watching Mullens play it was not a difficult decision to start him again on Monday against the Giants.

Despite having one of the NFL’s best receivers in Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie running back Saquon Barkley, the veteran Manning and the Giants offense has not generated over 18 points in five of the eight games the team’s played and the veteran QB has thrown just eight touchdowns.

Beckham, the team leader in receptions with 61, entered last week’s bye with two consecutive weeks of eight catches or more and at least 136 yards. This season Beckham has five games of 100 yards or more.

Barkley has caught nine passes in each of the Giants past three games and on the season has 58 receptions. However, on the ground Barkley has gained just 38 and 43 yards over the last two games.

The offense is so woeful that the defense has given up 20 points on four occasions this season and the Giants lost each of the four games.

Injuries to 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo and backup C.J. Beathard gave Mullens his chance. The undrafted free agent from Southern Miss responded in great fashion passing for 262 yards with three touchdowns.

The 49ers win over the Raiders was costly though, as they lost Raheem Mostert, who had taken over the starting job in the offensive backfield. The running back fractured is forearm. Prior to his injury, Mostert had rushed for 86 yards, including a touchdown run of 52 yards, against the Raiders.

San Francisco is No. 12 in the NFL against the rush giving up just 102.8 yards a game.

The Giants offense awakens with Manning using a balanced running and passing attack, while the defense stops Mullens and the 49ers offense. New York quiets critics for a week winning 30-14.
