5 NFL teams that need improved QB play in 2019

If we’re being real, there are probably two dozen NFL teams that could be on this list. Hell, even teams with Pro Bowl quarterbacks — we’re looking at the Chicago Bears — could use improved performances from their man under center.

But for this list, we’re talking about teams that could go from missing to reaching the playoffs if their signal-caller gets the job done. With that in mind…

5. San Francisco 49ers

Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL in Week 3 last season. The injury led to C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens starting, and the 49ers picking second-overall in the NFL Draft. With Garoppolo finally healthy, San Francisco needs to see quality play from the Eastern Illinois product. Without it, the 49ers are lucky to crack .500 in a division that features the powerful Los Angeles Rams and the ever-dangerous Seattle Seahawks.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

Perhaps no tam traded up more than the Jaguars this offseason. Out with Blake Bortles, in comes Nick Foles. Foles isn’t perfect, but he’s a solid veteran with a track record of reaching the playoffs (and then some). While Foles isn’t going to suddenly become an All-Pro, but he should be a steadying force for a team that hasn’t had once since Mark Brunell.

3. Tennessee Titans

Marcus Mariota is entering his fifth season, and he’s yet to throw for 4,000 yards or 30 touchdowns. While the Titans have long been a ground-and-pound type of team, they’ve also been adding playmakers in youngsters such as Corey Davis and Adam Humphries.  If Tennessee is going to compete in the suddenly solid AFC South, it will need Mariota to finally prove he is a franchise guy and not a bust.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers have tons of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Mike Evans is an elite receiver and the combination of O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate at tight end might be the game’s best. However, Jameis Winston hasn’t been Aable to stop turning the ball over throughout the first four years of his career. With Bruce Arians taking over at head coach, Winston will be given every opportunity to succeed. It’s on him.

1. Minnesota Vikings

This isn’t fair, but then again, so be it. Kirk Cousins threw for 4,298 yards and 30 touchdowns, but often came up short against the best competition. Minnesota needs Cousins to be phenomenal if he’s going to be worth a fully-guaranteed $84 million contract. If Minnesota doesn’t reach the playoffs again, it’ll be a brutal season for all involved.
